What This Test Measures

Magnesium participates in >300 enzymatic reactions including neuromuscular function and cardiac rhythm.

Hypomagnesemia often coexists with hypokalemia and hypocalcemia — magnesium correction helps stabilize other electrolytes.

Serum magnesium may be normal with total body depletion.
