Troponin (I and T) are cardiac muscle proteins released into the bloodstream upon myocardial damage. The primary marker for acute myocardial infarction with high specificity.

Causes of Elevation

  • Acute myocardial infarction
  • Unstable angina
  • Myocarditis
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Sepsis with myocardial involvement
  • Renal failure (moderate elevation)
